Hoffa Scholarships Meet

Wide-Ranging Need for College Tuition

WASHINGTON – September 5, 2024 – Hundreds of scholarships from the James R. Hoffa Memorial Scholarship Fund valued at $1.2 million were awarded this year to the sons and daughters of Teamster members in the United States and Canada. Since the Fund’s beginnings in 1999, more than $14.5 million in tuition dollars have been awarded to students planning to attend a four-year college or a vocational/training program.

“The Fund helps to ease the financial burden of Teamster children and their families because of the high cost of college tuition,” said James P. Hoffa, Teamsters General President Emeritus. “We have heard from many parents of student winners who express their gratitude and told us how much the awards mean to their families. My father, James R. Hoffa, devoted his life to working families and would have been proud of the support the Fund has given to Teamster families.”

A vocational/training program winner, Harold, wrote, “Thank you James R. Hoffa Memorial for accepting me for this scholarship. I will use it toward my tuition at school to study diesel engine repair and chassis fabrication. Thank you for choosing me for the award.”

And, a parent of a winner wrote, “I wanted to take a moment out to thank you all for selecting my daughter as a recipient of a $1,000 scholarship via the James R. Hoffa Scholarship Program…I am sure you had many people apply and I am so proud that you have selected my daughter to be one of the lucky ones to receive this award!!! I am a proud Teamster and a Steward.”

Another winner added, “I am honored to be one of this year’s recipients of the James R. Hoffa Memorial Scholarship. Thanks to your generosity, I’m able to further my education and I will be pursuing a degree in Ceramic Engineering. With your support, I will be able to partake in student design and organizations like the Society of Women Engineers. I hope to one day solve real world problems with the skills I will learn and to help fight the world energy crisis.”
